Budget pacing is a quiet problem. Nothing looks broken in the account: impressions are up, clicks are up, the daily budget is fully spent. But look at an hour-of-day report and you often find the money is gone before lunch, while the hours when your best customers search (after work, on the phone, on the sofa) are starved.
Start with the hour-of-day report
Segment conversions by hour across the last 90 days. Most local service businesses see two spikes: a morning burst of research-mode searches and an evening wave of buying-mode searches. If spend is front-loaded, the evening wave never sees your ad.
Three fixes, in order
- Ad schedule bid adjustments. Pull bids down during the low-converting morning hours and up during your conversion windows. Keep the adjustments modest (10 to 25 percent) and review after two weeks.
- Move to a target-CPA or target-ROAS strategy. Smart bidding already models time of day, but only if you give it enough conversions. Below about 30 conversions a month, stay manual and use the schedule.
- Split campaigns by intent. Research terms and buying terms deserve different budgets. Put the buying terms in their own campaign so they are never crowded out.
Pacing fixes rarely raise spend. They move the same dollars to better hours, which is the cheapest optimisation most accounts will ever make.
